There a military unit stationed out on Sipadan island, due to the fact that some Filipino terrorists kidnapped a bunch of locals and tourists from here about 4 years ago and held them for nearly a year, killing many of them in the process. Good to know that the soldier sleeping in the hammock can't be seen, as both him and his hammock are in camoflage. In all seriousness though, the Malaysian gov't has been pretty serious about keeping the tourists and locals safe -- we saw lots of military patrol boats in the area around the islands and police stops on the roads on the mainland.
